Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is a type of cancer that affects the colon or rectum. It occurs when abnormal cells in the colon or rectum grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor. Symptoms of colon cancer may include a change in bowel habits, persistent abdominal discomfort, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue. However, some people with colon cancer may have no symptoms at all. Screening for colon cancer is recommended for all adults starting at age 50, or earlier for those with certain risk factors. Screening may include tests such as a colonoscopy, stool tests, or a virtual colonoscopy. Treatment for colon cancer depends on the stage of the disease and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of these treatments. Early detection and treatment are important for improving outcomes and reducing the risk of complications.
